It was great with that BIFA win over the weekend, what with Helena Bonham Carter winning Best Supporting Actress for her role as The Queen Mum in ‘The King’s Speech’. But you have to love her even more because she used her recent win as a springboard to – yes – more work. But why would someone like Helena want more? What’s up with that?
She may be 44 but Helena also bagged the Richard Harris award for Outstanding Achievement In Film and has produced two (doubtlessly talented in acting/directing) chillen with director Tim Burton. All she needs to do is run for Parliament and make her own winter coats, and she’s pretty much “done it all”, as the phrase goes.
But no. At the ceremony in London, she quipped:
“I don’t just work for the boyfriend, and I am very much available for work. Not just supporting roles, leads would be great too.”
Darling! The secret has always been to act like a swan: float on top and paddle underneath. It’s supposed to look effortless, success.
But maybe Helena is showing us that we’re entering a new age of honesty so that just when you think that OTHER people have it so good, you see it ain’t necessarily so. Helena’s little “hire me” placard proves that those successful people we admire struggle just like, well, people who look like they’re struggling.
It’s a jungle in here.
