Whoa, remember all those arguments you had with idiots who’d say (*whiny voice*), “I don’t like the film because the book was better”? Well now, Random House, the publishing giant, has gone and made a whole site for that sort of thing. Word And Film does some cool stuff already, for instance, Niels Arden Oplev, the original director of ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ (the first Swedish film taken from the book trilogy which has sold over 30 million copies so far) taking a pot shot at the American remake of his (probably better) film.
In an interview at the site (read it here) he says, “I know a lot of Academy members have seen the film and liked it because every time I go to LA I meet so many people who have seen my version of it. Even in Hollywood there seems to be a kind of anger about the remake, like, ‘Why would they remake something when they can just go see the original?’ Everybody who loves film will go see the original one. It’s like, what do you want to see, the French version of “La Femme Nikita” or the American one? You can hope that Fincher does a better job.”
That’s SO MEAN to compare Besson’s ‘La Femme Nikita’ (for a little trip in the Way Back Machine, my review got on the poster for that film, awww) to the American ‘Nikita’ – that’s like comparing the original Dutch ‘The Vanishing’ to the American version which was universally panned for its hugely changed ending.
Of course the remake won’t be as good. But we never expect that. ‘Let The Right One In’ versus ‘Let Me In’ etc. Americans just don’t want to read subtitles. Lazy swines!
Right now, I’m trying to think… which is the WORST American remake you know? My vote goes to ‘The Vanishing’.
