According to reports out today, Stephen Gately died after a massive drinking binge which began at 9.30pm in the evening on Friday and continued on into the early hours of Saturday. It is thought he had fallen asleep on a sofa and died later by choking on his own vomit.

Spanish Police are also searching for a 25-year old Bulgarian man, known only as Giorgio, who Gately and his partner invited back to their £1million apartment in Port Andratx, Majorca. He is said to be wanted for questioning as a vital witness as it is un-clear whether he left the apartment before or after Gately’s death. Police have already ruled out any signs of violence or drug abuse but believe that the Bulgarian man could help piece together the mystery surrounding Gately’s death.

Gately’s partner Andrew Cowles is said to have discovered the body at 1.45pm on Saturday afternoon alone in the apartment and immediately tried to revive him with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, however Gately had drowned from the fluid on his lungs.

An investigator reported that Gately was found “squatting face down on the sofa, almost in a prayer position”. As it is a bank holiday in Spain today the post-mortem will now be carried out tomorrow.

Gately and Cowles who were said to be celebrating the completion of rennovations on their Spanish holiday apartment, went to The Black Cat Club, one of Majorca’s leading gay clubs, and were seen leaving at 4.30am.

Gately’s parents were too upset to speak publicly yesterday, but the remaining four members of Boyzone flew out to Majorca last night to be with Cowles and his sisters at the apartment, to offer support. A joint statement on the band’s website said they “were distraught by the death of their friend and brother”.
